Projects

Outdoor Test Facility High Speed Vehicle Prototype, South Korea. Our firm designed a high speed vehicle prototype system, including vehicle, guideway, and control system; completed a contract to build the vehicle and control system and deliver it, test it, and oversaw construction of the guideway and operations/maintenance facility, including site plan and development. Our vehicle design included all subsystems including the vehicle frame, exterior skin, electrical, electronic and mechanical systems, wireless vehicle to wayside communications, control center servers and workstations, control/signaling system software including developing the HMI and software at the control center, vehicle acceleration/braking profiles and ATP/ATO/ATC/ATS systems; integrated design of all off the shelf equipment, including equipment mounting and interconnections, structural, mechanical, and electrical modeling and analysis; finite element analysis of vehicle frame and wheels, and vehicle performance analysis and computational fluid dynamics simulations (computer wind tunnel simulation). We assembled a project team of employees to build the vehicle, and completed factory testing of the completed vehicle and control system reaching 200 mph speeds (on dynamometer), in addition to on site construction management and integrated testing/commissioning of the prototype system. This vehicle system provides 160 mph operation during service, and is fully automatic and driverless.

Outdoor Test Facility High Speed Vehicle Prototype, South Korea

Las Vegas Monorail, Douglas Petersen & Associates/Lloyds of London: Prepared a system evaluation report, and provided construction management services, including scheduling and contract administration support, for all subsystems including communications, train control, stations, track/guideway, automated fair collection, TPSS, power rail, system-wide electrical, and O&M facilities. This project covered the entire 7 station, 3.9 mile system, from the Hilton to MGM Hotels. The concrete guideway/track is elevated dual lane, with driverless trains and communications based train control.

Las Vegas Monorail, Douglas Petersen & Associates/Lloyds of London

Daegu Monorail, Daegu, South Korea, Sungwon Tramway: Provided planning, alternatives analysis, and design services for this 15 mile, 30 station automated people mover system, including analysis of river crossing options (cable suspension, cable stayed, segment box girder, beam, arch), column and guideway options, and presentations to the project team and management. The river crossing includes a dual lane 1000 ft. bridge span.

Daegu Monorail, Daegu, South Korea, Sungwon Tramway

California Exposition Trolley, Sacramento, CalExpo: Performed site investigation for the existing system, completed a system assessment and design services for this existing Trolley, after 25 years in operation. We completed a system refurbishment plan and cost estimate for all subsystems, including stations, power rail, track/guideway, TPSS, communications, train control, automated fare collection, system-wide electrical, and O&M facilities. Our firm assisted in completing phase 1 of the plan to repair the existing power distribution system and contact/power rail. We designed specialized maintenance vehicles and equipment for the phase 1 refurbishment.

California Exposition Trolley, Sacramento, CalExpo

Newark Airport AirTrain, New Jersey, Von Roll Transport Systems: Provided planning and design services, including preparation of the airside and landside safety/security plan, failure management plan, winterization plan, guideway alignment alternatives analysis, design of elevated steel guideway and switches, guideway heating system, and maintenance vehicle. The system is 3 miles in length with 8 passenger stations.

Newark Airport AirTrain, New Jersey, Von Roll Transport Systems

Las Colinas People Mover, Los Colinas, Texas, Universal Mobility: Provided planning and design services for guideway and vehicles, prepared system cost estimates for all subsystems, including track/guideway, TPSS, automated fare collection, communications, train control, stations, system-wide electrical, power rail, and O&M facilities. Also, completed a capacity analysis for initial planning. This system is 1.4 miles in length with 4 passenger stations.

Las Colinas People Mover, Los Colinas, Texas, Universal Mobility

New Orleans World Exposition Monorail, Louisiana, Universal Mobility: Provided planning, design, manufacturing inspections and support, construction management, contract administration, and operations/maintenance support for the entire project. Our work included systems and civil subsystems (guideway, stations, O&M facilities, substations, power/contact rail, train control, system-wide electrical, communications and fare collection), for this 3 station, 1.5 mile system. The project included elevated steel guideway, with a fleet of 6 – 10 car trains.

New Orleans World Exposition Monorail, Louisiana, Universal Mobility

Dade County Zoological Park & Gardens Monorail: Provided planning, design, manufacturing inspections and support, and construction management. Our work included systems and civil subsystems (guideway, stations, maintenance facility, substations, contact/power rail, system-wide electrical, train control, and communications), for this 4 station, 2 mile system. The project included elevated steel guideway, with a fleet of 6 trains.

Dade County Zoological Park & Gardens Monorail

Milwaukee Medical Center People Mover: Completed system planning, conceptual and preliminary designs, route selection, plan & profile, capacity analysis, station and maintenance facility location selection, alternatives analysis, value engineering, and cost estimation. Performed site inspections of alignment and station sites, and verified interfaces with existing medical buildings. The alignment included a freeway crossing, connecting remote parking areas, retail and commercial areas, with the geographically separated buildings of the medical facility.

Milwaukee Medical Center People Mover

Houston Texas Medical Center People Mover: Performed site inspections of alignment and station sites. Completed system planning, preliminary design, route selection, alignment layout, capacity analysis, station and maintenance facility location selection, alternatives analysis, value engineering, detailed traction power/duty cycle analysis and report for motor/vehicle sizing, cost estimate, and feasibility report.

Houston Texas Medical Center People Mover

Grand Canyon South Rim Transit System, Arizona: Performed system planning including capacity analysis, detailed renderings at multiple locations, alternatives analysis, value engineering to determine quantity and number of vehicles, and cost estimation. The system was proposed to connect parking and lodging facilities, the transportation center, and viewpoints at the Grand Canyon.

London Thames River People Mover, London, England: Completed system planning including transit technology assessment, conceptual design, plan & profile, capacity analysis, station and maintenance facility location selection, renderings of London, aerial guideway structure and vehicle; alternatives analysis for different vehicle sizes, value engineering, and cost estimation.

Chongqing Main Line Transit System, China: Assessed technology applicability, completed system planning, conceptual design, route selection, capacity analysis, station and maintenance facility location selection, plan and profile alternatives analysis of alignments and associated costs, value engineering to determine optimum vehicle size, column spacing, and alignment route, life cycle cost estimation and assistance in preparing the feasibility reports with the ENFI Engineering Institute from Beijing. Performed a site investigation, and completed a conceptual design, including fixed guideway/track, stations, substations, overhead contact system (OCS), train control/signaling, communications, passenger vehicles, fare collection, and O&M facilities. This transit system was proposed to connect the main peninsula in the city center of Chongqing, across the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers to north and south areas of this city of 32 million. The project is associated with population being relocated to the city of Chongqing from the Three Gorges area of the Yangtze river, due to construction of the Yangtze river dam project.

Chongqing Airport People Mover, China: Completed system planning, conceptual design, route selection, capacity analysis, station and maintenance facility location selection, alternatives analysis for various alignments, value engineering to determine pylon spacing and vehicle size, and cost estimation. Performed a number of site investigations in Chongqing. Our work covered all subsystems, including fixed guideway/track, stations, substations, overhead contact system (OCS), train control/signaling, communications, passenger vehicles, fare collection, and O&M facilities. This system will connect the Chongqing Main Line Transit system just west of the downtown area at the Chongqing Chaotianmen Transit system City Center station, to the airport north of the city.

Chongqing Airport People Mover, China

Downtown People Mover, Las Vegas, Magnetic Transit of America: LA completed final alignment design verification using our proprietary computer programs for this guideway with spiral curves. Provided construction management services including guideway inspections at the Texas fabrication facility, and quality control during erection using high-precision, triangulated surveying methods to properly locate beams over columns, and accurately align beam to beam connections. Performed site inspections of alignment and station sites. Magnetic Transit of America was purchased by Westinghouse, which stopped further project construction.

Aerobus People Mover Test Track: LA staff completed system planning, preliminary design, route selection, alignment layout, capacity analysis, station and maintenance facility location selection, alternatives analysis, value engineering and estimate of the capital cost of construction for all subsystems. Completed preliminary design of the guideway, passenger vehicle, freight vehicle overhead contact system (OCS), substations, communications, and system-wide electrical. Prepared computer renderings/animation of passenger and freight vehicles with guideway and station.

PANYNJ NY Airport Access System JFK-LaGuardia: Completed system planning, analysis of the proposed alignment, alternatives analysis for alignment changes, alignment layout, capacity analysis, value engineering to determine optimum quantity and size of vehicles, and prepared a cost model for the capital cost of construction for all subsystems, including track/guideway, vehicles, stations, fare collection, communications, train control, system-wide electrical, power rail, and O&M facilities.

Covington/Cincinnati People Mover: Completed system planning, analysis of the proposed alignment, alternatives analysis for alignment changes, alignment layout, capacity analysis, value engineering to determine optimum quantity and size of vehicles, and prepared a cost model for the capital cost of construction for all subsystems, including communications, automated fare collection, train control, stations, track/guideway, substations, power rail, system-wide electrical, and O&M facilities. Prepared presentation materials, and assisted in the presentation to the City of Covington, Kentucky.

Covington/Cincinnati People Mover

Auraria Higher Education Center People Mover, Denver: Completed system planning, preliminary design, route selection, alignment layout, capacity analysis, station and maintenance facility location selection, alternatives analysis for guideway alignments and vehicle, and project capital construction cost estimate for all subsystems including train control, stations, track/guideway, substations, power rail, system-wide electrical, communications, automated fare collection, and O&M facilities. This monorail system is to connect parking facilities at Mile High Stadium with the college campus. Completed a site inspection, performed an alternatives analysis, and completed the preliminary guideway structural analysis for the I-25 freeway crossing.

Auraria Higher Education Center People Mover, Denver

Hershey Park Monorail Rehabilitation, Hershey, Pennsylvania: Completed cost estimates to replace the aging monorail trains installed in 1968. The vehicle cost estimate included car body modules, bogies, chassis, lighting, doors and door openers, FRP shell, flooring, interior finishes and seating, traction drives and controller, on board PLCs and operator control console, and vehicle ancillary electrical systems.

Hershey Park Monorail Rehabilitation, Hershey, Pennsylvania

Sokcho Resort People Mover (South Korea): Completed system planning, conceptual design, route selection, plan and profile, system passenger capacity analysis, station and maintenance facility location selection, alternatives analysis, value engineering, estimation and feasibility report. Performed site inspections of alignment and station sites, including integration with existing buildings and structures. This transit system was proposed to connect lodging, business, convention, and national park facilities to ease traffic congestion in this resort area near the northern border of South Korea.

Dalian Bay Crossing People Mover, China: Assessed transit technology to use for the bay crossing, completed system planning, conceptual design, route selection, network capacity analysis, alternatives analysis for various alignments, value engineering to determine pylon spacing and vehicle size, and life cycle cost estimation for all subsystems. Performed site inspections for the alignment and station locations proposed by the city, and reviewed alternatives with the city of Dalian representatives.

Dalian Bay Crossing People Mover, China

Macau People Mover, Hong Kong: Performed site inspections of the terminal station sites and bay crossing. Completed system planning including technology assessment for use at this site, conceptual design for pylons and foundations, profile at center ship crossing, capacity analysis, alternatives analysis for different vehicle sizes, value engineering for pylon spacing, and life cycle cost estimation for all subsystems. This people mover is proposed to connect Hong Kong with the island of Macau across a shallow bay.

This people mover is proposed to connect the new Hong Kong international airport with this proposed land development resort project.

Golden Horn Transit System, Istanbul, Turkey: Completed site investigation, system planning including conceptual design, route selection, capacity analysis, station and maintenance facility location selection, detailed renderings and animation of a vehicle approaching a station with passenger loading and vehicle departing the station, alternatives analysis for various alignments and major structure spans, value engineering to select vehicle sizes and guideway spans, and capital cost estimation. This system is to be used to relieve congestion in a high traffic area near the city center and mosque, and to provide connections to the existing Light Rail and Subway systems.

Bosphorus Transit System, Istanbul, Turkey: Completed site investigation, system planning including conceptual design, analysis of steep grades for applicability to the technology selected, route selection, capacity analysis, station and maintenance facility location selection, alternatives analysis for various alignments and major structure spans, value engineering to select vehicle sizes and guideway spans, and life cycle cost estimation. This system is to be used to relieve congestion in a popular tourism area adjacent to the Bosphorous River and Istanbul Palace.

This project is a vehicle transport system, to transport private cars from one side of a river to the other, using monorail container transport technology.
